Laravel Filament: Build an Admin Panel in Minutes (Not Months) 🚀
Laravel Filament: Build an Admin Panel in Minutes (Not Months) 🚀
Let me tell you about the darkest timeline of my career: being asked to "just quickly build an admin panel" for a client.
Famous last words.
Three weeks, four custom data tables, two custom modals, and one near-breakdown later — I had something that looked like it was designed in 2003. And it was slow. And it had bugs. And the client wanted to add "just a few more filters."
That was before I discovered Filament. Now I can ship a full-featured admin panel before the client finishes their second coffee. No joke.
What Even Is Filament? 🤔
Filament is a Laravel admin panel builder. But calling it "just an admin panel" is like calling a Swiss Army knife "just a knife."
It gives you:
- Beautiful, responsive CRUD interfaces out of the box
- Tables with sorting, filtering, searching
- Forms with every input type you'll ever need
- Stats dashboards, widgets, charts
- Role-based access (plays nicely with Spatie permissions)
- And it's all built on Livewire + Alpine.js (no separate frontend build step)
In production systems I've built, Filament went from "experiment" to "default choice for every admin panel" after the first project. The alternative — rolling your own — is a trap I will never fall into again.
The Setup (Seriously, This Fast) ⚡
composer require filament/filament:"^3.0" -W
php artisan filament:install --panels
php artisan make:filament-user
That's it. Visit /admin and you have a working admin panel. I've seen developers not believe me until they try it themselves.
Your First Resource: CRUD in 60 Seconds 🎯
Say you have a Product model. Here's how you get a full CRUD interface:
php artisan make:filament-resource Product --generate
The --generate flag reads your database columns and builds the form and table automatically. You get:
- A searchable, sortable data table
- A create form
- An edit form
- A delete button with confirmation
All from one command.
Real Talk: The first time I ran this on a 20-column products table and saw a fully functional CRUD panel appear in seconds, I genuinely laughed. It felt like cheating.
The Part That'll Actually Save Your Sanity 🧠
Let me show you a before/after that should make you immediately close any admin panel you're currently building by hand.
Before Filament (the pain):
You'd write a controller, a bunch of views, handle form submissions, validate inputs, flash success messages, redirect back... for EACH resource. Days per feature.
After Filament (the joy):
// In your ProductResource.php
public static function form(Form $form): Form
{
return $form->schema([
TextInput::make('name')->required()->maxLength(255),
TextInput::make('price')->numeric()->prefix('$'),
Select::make('category_id')->relationship('category', 'name'),
Toggle::make('is_active')->default(true),
RichEditor::make('description')->columnSpanFull(),
]);
}
public static function table(Table $table): Table
{
return $table
->columns([
TextColumn::make('name')->searchable()->sortable(),
TextColumn::make('price')->money('USD'),
IconColumn::make('is_active')->boolean(),
TextColumn::make('category.name')->badge(),
])
->filters([
SelectFilter::make('category')->relationship('category', 'name'),
TernaryFilter::make('is_active'),
]);
}
That's a production-ready admin UI with search, filters, a rich text editor, a money field, a relationship picker, and toggle switches. Under 30 lines. I've written more code than this just to handle a single form submission.
The Widgets Are Insane 📊
Here's where Filament goes from "useful" to "I'm showing this to every client."
php artisan make:filament-widget StatsOverview --stats-overview
protected function getStats(): array
{
return [
Stat::make('Total Orders', Order::count())
->description('All time orders')
->color('success'),
Stat::make('Revenue This Month', '$' . number_format(
Order::thisMonth()->sum('total'), 2
))
->description('Month to date')
->color('primary'),
Stat::make('Pending Shipments', Order::pending()->count())
->description('Need attention')
->color('warning'),
];
}
A live stats dashboard. Three lines per metric. As a Technical Lead, I've learned that clients love dashboards more than almost any other feature — and Filament makes building them embarrassingly fast.
Pro Tips from Actual Production Usage 🛠️
Pro Tip #1: Lean into Actions
Custom actions on table rows are where Filament really shines:
Action::make('approve')
->requiresConfirmation()
->action(fn (Order $record) => $record->approve())
->color('success')
->icon('heroicon-o-check-circle')
One block of code. You get a button, a confirmation modal, and the actual logic. That would've been a custom controller endpoint + JS modal in the old days.
Pro Tip #2: Spatie Permissions Integration
If you're using spatie/laravel-permission (and you should be), Filament has a plugin that wires it all up automatically:
composer require bezhansalleh/filament-shield
Role and permission management UI, gate checks on resources — done. A pattern that saved us in a real project where we had 5 different admin roles with different access levels. No custom authorization code required.
Pro Tip #3: Don't Fight the Conventions
Filament is opinionated, and that's a feature. Don't try to make it do things the "custom" way when there's a Filament way. I spent two hours trying to build a custom multi-step form before I found Wizard — a built-in multi-step form component. Read the docs first. 🙂
Real Talk: When NOT to Use Filament 💬
Look, I love Filament, but it's not magic dust you sprinkle on everything.
Skip it if:
- Your "admin panel" is just one or two simple screens — it's overkill
- You need a deeply custom UX that fights Filament's conventions at every turn
- Your team has zero Livewire experience and no time to learn (rare, but it happens)
Use it when:
- You need a full CRUD admin for 5+ models
- You want something that looks professional out of the box
- You need to ship fast and can't afford weeks on a custom interface
In production e-commerce systems I've built at Cubet, Filament handles the merchant dashboard, product management, order processing, and reporting — all from a single installation with minimal custom code. The ROI is absurd.
Bonus Tips 🎁
Table bulk actions — select multiple rows and run an action on all of them. Two lines of code. Would've taken a day to build custom.
Global search — php artisan make:filament-resource and your model is instantly searchable from the top bar across the entire admin.
Dark mode — it's built in. Clients always ask. Now you can say yes in 10 seconds.
Custom pages — not everything is a CRUD. php artisan make:filament-page gives you a blank canvas page inside your admin panel for custom reporting, analytics, or literally anything else.
TL;DR ✅
- Filament = full admin panel in hours, not weeks
--generateflag auto-builds forms and tables from your DB schema- Built-in widgets, stats, charts, and custom actions
- Plays perfectly with Spatie, Livewire, and the rest of the Laravel ecosystem
- The time you save on the admin panel goes back into building actual features
I've built admin panels from scratch. I've used other solutions. Filament is the one I keep coming back to, and the one I recommend to every Laravel team I work with.
Stop building admin panels by hand. Your future self will thank you.
Tried Filament yet? Tell me what you built with it on LinkedIn — I love seeing what people ship.
