Normal people: "It's a broken TV tuner" RF nerds: "It's a radio spectrum analyzer, scanner, decoder, and signal explorer!" ๐ป

- Old way: Want to listen to police radio? Buy a $300 police scanner.
- Old way: Want to track planes? Buy a $500 ADS-B receiver.
- Old way: Want to decode weather satellites? Good luck finding the equipment!

My First RTL-SDR Experience (It Was Magical) โจ
Day 1: The Purchase
Me on Amazon: "RTL-SDR Blog V3... $25... can receive 500 kHz - 1.7 GHz... sure, why not?"
Two days later: Package arrives. I plug it in. Windows doesn't recognize it. Download some sketchy drivers. Reboot.
10 minutes later: I'm running SDR# (SDR Sharp) and seeing... a waterfall display of colorful signals? What are all these lines? WHAT DOES IT MEAN?! ๐
Day 1, Hour 1: First Success
I tune to 1090 MHz (ADS-B aircraft frequency).
On screen: Weird digital bursts. Numbers appearing. Then... a map appears showing planes flying over my house! ๐ซ
Flight: UAL1234
Altitude: 35,000 ft
Speed: 450 knots
Aircraft: Boeing 737
Location: [updates live on map]

2. Decode Weather Satellites (NOAA APT on 137 MHz)
This blew my mind even more than the planes.
The idea: NOAA weather satellites orbit overhead several times per day, broadcasting RAW weather images at 137 MHz. For FREE. To ANYONE with an antenna.
My first satellite image:
- Check satellite pass predictions (when it's overhead)
- Tune RTL-SDR to 137.62 MHz (NOAA 18)
- Record the weird warbling audio for 15 minutes
- Run it through WXtoImg decoder
- OUT COMES AN ACTUAL SATELLITE IMAGE OF EARTH! ๐
What I saw: The entire eastern seaboard, cloud formations, hurricanes, my city from space. Taken 10 minutes ago. From a satellite I tracked across the sky. With a $20 dongle.
My reaction: "THIS SHOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE FOR THIS CHEAP!" ๐ฑ
3. Listen to Basically Everything
What I've successfully received:
- FM Radio (88-108 MHz): Crystal clear, better than car radio
- Air Traffic Control (118-137 MHz): "United 237, cleared for landing runway 27"
- Weather Radio (162 MHz): NOAA weather alerts
- Amateur Radio (144 MHz, 430 MHz): Ham operators chatting
- Marine Radio (156 MHz): Boats talking to harbors
- Pagers (929 MHz): Yes, pagers still exist! Medical, fire departments
- Garage Door Openers (300-400 MHz): Don't worry, just receiving not hacking! ๐
- Wireless Doorbells: Seeing signal bursts when neighbors' doorbells ring
- Tire Pressure Sensors (315/433 MHz): Cars broadcast this data!
Important legal note: In most countries (including the US), you can RECEIVE anything. You just can't TRANSMIT without a license. RTL-SDR is receive-only, so you're good! ๐ป

RF exposure:

- Can't transmit = can't harm
